Hi, I’m Katie
I’m an amateur Australian mountain biker. Here you will find destination reviews, trail guides, and insights into mountain biking. Through this blog I wish to encourage others, especially women, to gain confidence as riders and explore new trails.
Why have I started this blog? I’ve been wanting a creative project and whilst I enjoy writing, I never seem to have much to write about. I enjoy mountain biking and it’s brought me to so many amazing places. So I thought, perhaps I can write about my experiences riding and the travel that comes with it.
It’s not that I’m a super hardcore rider or live and breathe bikes, but it’s something I enjoy and want to share. There’s also a gender divide in mountain biking with more men enjoying the sport than women. I can’t do much to change that, but my hope is that by adding a female voice into the mix it will give encouragement to women, especially those new to mountain biking or taking it up as an adult.
I’m not an amazing rider, not by a long shot. Some days I push my boundaries, other times I freak out and refuse to ride something I know I’m capable of. I have a ton of admiration for anyone who throws themselves in and takes risks. Sometimes that’s me, often it’s not.
For a while I’ve hesitated to write a blog about biking because I’m not a competitive or expert rider. Lately though I’ve thought that perhaps that’s not a bad thing. I have so much admiration for riders such as Rachel Atherton and Tahnee Seagrave and they’re utterly inspiring. But because they’re so amazing, I don’t see them and think “oh I could do that”. It’s when I see women on my local trails taking on a feature or conquering a climb that I think “if she can do it, maybe I can too”.
High level competitive women are carving the way for more and more women to enter the sport. The challenges they face on and off track are monumental and they are doing an amazing job. As far as women taking up riding though, I think seeing their peers enjoying it that can have a big impact on how likely that are to give it a try.
I hope that by being ordinary, by sharing my fears and failures, I’ll show a welcoming and accessible side to a sport that can often be seen as aggressive and gnarly. There are trails all over Australia and as well as writing about riding I hope to share other adventures and experiences I have along the way.
This blog is mostly about mountain biking but for me it’s also a chance to pause, reflect, and appreciate the adventure each day can bring. I hope it will be insightful, encouraging, and a little bit weird.
Until next time, Katie.
